Joe Zawinul & the Zawinul Syndicate feat. Arnaud Delafosse

The facts:

Phone call just after midnight Friday 25 Oct 2002 for a gig later in the day, in Cork (Ireland). The Cork Jazz festival, with Joe Zawinul (Paco's in Milan and his passport ...in Munich Airport's lost properties)

The meeting:

Joe: “Hi! ... I've never heard you play before.”
me: “nope.” (we both smile...)
Joe: “Can you play fast??...”

The conditions:

Have I heard the last album? No.
I've got 1 hour in the hotel room to check it out
and 5 mins with the musicians at the end of the meal.
No rehearsal. No soundcheck. Not EVEN a line-check.

The last words:

Joe: “Hey man, you did a great job. You can be proud of yourself!”

The lasting thought:

I am... I'm also the happiest drummer in the world.
